In the mid 80's MARK Z was a roadie for Don Griffin's, "The Griff Band". One of the fringe benefits was sitting in on a few songs at each gig. Through association with Don, Mark was able to meet many of Chicago's upper echelon of Blues stars, some of whom invited Mark to sit in and learn the Blues from the masters. Some of the artists include; Casey Jones, J.W. Williams, Charlies Love, Buddy Guy, and some who are no longer with us, Lefty Dizz, Golden Wheeler, and the late great Jr. Wells.
On Sunday's, Mark would go down to Maxwell Street and would sit in with Maxwell Street Jimmy Davis. In 1999, Mark joined Kax and the the Black Light Show Band fronted by the former drummer of Big Twist and the Mellow Fellows. Shortly thereafter, Mark joined the New Fun Band, adding color to their unique blend blend of rock, blues, country and folk. Later that year, Mark recorded with R. P Michaels band Blue Plate Special on their 2nd release, "The Blues Ain't Pretty". Mark continues playing with the New Fun Band until the formation of the Mark Z Band.
A year later, when Griffin opened his studio and retired from playing live, The Mark Z Band had many guest guitarists including; Carson Landis, Ken Nelson, and Harry Binford all formerly with Studebaker John and the Hawks. The Mark Z Band now features HARRY BINFORD whose approach to the Blues is reminiscent of the late Mike Bloomfield. Harry also played with LaVelle White and is currently a member of Blue Plate special, as well.
Pat Doody left to tour with Lonnie Brooks and many drummers stepped up to fill the void including Scott Bonshire from Heartsfield and Mark Fornick formerly with Ronnie Earl. Mark has chosen ERIC BARON from the Sammy Fender Band and is his current drummer.
R.P. MICHAELS, an original member of the Mark Z Band, continues to supply his driving bass and adds depth with gritty vocals. He was formerly with Muddy Water Blues Ban (1972 & 1981) and the Sam Lay-Joe Kelley Band (1973). He also hosted the Kingston Mines Blues Jam in 1975. R.P has been a constant member of Blue Plate Special for over thirty years
